This Workshop will present an overview of the instruments and methodology currently available for visible/Infrared field spectroscopy. On the first day, the instructors will briefly review theory for solar and internal light spectrometers, reflectance spectroscopy, operations of the instruments, data management, software, and field practices. Basic GPS (Global Positioning Systems) techniques will also be covered as GPS is an integral part of proper field sampling. The course will be held in Tonapah, Nevada with field work in Goldfield and Cuprite on the second day. Numerous applications of field spectroscopy will be addressed through exercises. These include ground truthing for hyperspectral remote sensing, alteration mapping to develop precious metals mineralization vectors; ore zone characterization, iron mineral field reconnaissance, identification and characterization of acid drainage minerals, and reflectance calibration for atmospheric correction algorithms. The latter will use the benchmark Stonewall Playa at Cuprite. The course will also include a spectral scavenger hunt for buddingtonite at Cuprite, a presentation Saturday evening on the current Goldfield exploration program, and a private tour of the Tonapah Mining Park Museum. Handouts will include an extensive syllabus on CD Rom with summaries on Solar illuminated Spectroscopy, Reflectance Spectroscopy, field sampling procedures, Spectroscopy applied to alteration systems, and to mine waste evaluation. Spectral Measurements Field Guide by John Salisbury will also be included.

The participants will travel to historic Tonapah on Friday evening, November 3rd , experience the ambiance of Tonapah, Goldfield and Cuprite and return to Las Vegas, Sunday evening, November 5th. Special accommodations can be made for former course participants who wish to take only the field portion of the class and who demonstrate proficiency with the field instruments. Please contact Workshop Leader for further information.

This short course (November 3-5th) is held in conjunction with the ERIM Fourteenth International Conference and Workshops on Applied Geologic Remote Sensing, to be held 6-8 November 2000, in Las Vegas. Please contact ERIM for additional information.
