APPLIED REFLECTANCE SPECTROSCOPY
This manual is used in the PIMA” Spectrometer training classes and will be made available to the general Reflectance Spectroscopy Community.
It covers the basic theory behind reflectance spectroscopy with discussions on the electronic transitions and vibrational processes that create the absorption features seen within the visible through Short Wave InfraRed regions of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. The emphasis of the book is in the SWIR region.
Spectral characteristics of minerals and mineral groups are covered in depth with emphasis on diagnostic features and environmental associations for each mineral. This section also includes examples and information on how crystallinity and chemical substitution can be determined and characterized using SWIR based techniques.
A chapter is devoted to data collection methods, in the field and laboratory, with descriptions of the different media from hand samples to powder to core to Reverse Circulation chips to pulps to liquids from which spectra can be collected. The most effective techniques for data acquisition are detailed with tips on signal enhancement and reduction of scatter.
Compound Identification is treated in detail. This starts initially with manual identification of the spectra and includes discussions of automated methods. It also illustrates mixtures and provides "hints" on unraveling them.
A most important topic is Spectral Variability and the need for diverse Spectral Libraries. This subject is treated in detail as it is one of the most important ones for understanding reflectance spectroscopy and the many variables influencing the collection of accurate, reproducible spectra.
The Manual is available as hard copy and will be available on CD Rom.
This publication is also available in a Spanish language version.
