Kimberlites are a group of volatile (CO2)-rich, potassic ultrabasic rocks with variable composition megacrysts in a fine grained groundmass. They are the main rock type in which diamonds are found.
The picture shows how easy it is to use the Field Spec Pro with the Mineral Probe to analyze kimberlite core samples. The plot shows some of the infrared active, diagnostic minerals used for exploration and identification of kimberlites. The spectra were collected using an ASD FieldSpec Pro full range spectrometer.
